Cody got up to relieve himself and discovered that they had really slept in. Jeff was long gone and the morning sun was streaming in the windows. He came back into Tyler's room he found the seventeen year old lying on top of the covers, his legs spread wide and his flaccid boyhood hanging between them.
"Morning, Cody," Tyler said.
"Hey," Cody replied. Sitting on the edge of the bed, his own beautiful nakedness on display.
"Why'd you come in here last night?" Tyler asked seriously.
"I don't know," he answered. "You seemed so confused, I just thought maybe you didn't need to be alone."
"You were right, I didn't," Tyler agreed. "So what's up for today? You and Tommy hitting the waves again?"
"Probably. You want to go?"
"Maybe. I'd kinda like to talk to Ryan too," Tyler said a little sadly.
"Whatever," Cody smiled. "You can do whatever you want to around here, like I said."
"Thanks," Tyler smiled and stretched widely.
Cody didn't bother to put any clothes on as he stood and stretched, pulling his already firm muscles even tighter. Tyler couldn't help but feel a little stirring in his loins at the sight of this beautiful 14 year old who seemed so much wiser than he. He considered making a suggestion for some more physical contact but Cody sailed out of the room heading for the kitchen.
Unlike Cody, Tyler wasn't yet completely comfortable striding around the house naked. He still felt like a stranger here to some extent but last night's talk with Cody had helped. Maybe it was okay for him to just let down here. Still there was Jeff to worry about. Cody hadn't told Jeff about the incident but if the two were as close as Cody said, it was only a matter of time and Tyler didn't know how he was going to handle that. And there was Tommy, Cody's friend, and beautiful friend too. Tyler's mind flooded with conflict. Shaking his head as if to clear it, he pulled on his briefs and headed for the kitchen himself. Cody was drinking milk from the carton as usual, standing in all his boyhood perfection looking at the older boy.
"Thanks again for the talk last night," Tyler said.
"No problem, man, anytime," Cody responded.
"You said I had to lighten up to be one of the family. I don't know how to do that?" Tyler said.
Cody sighed. It was awfully early to get into another serious discussion but maybe it had to be addressed. He smiled to himself inside as he noticed that Tyler did take the time to scan his body. Perhaps there was something buried under all this caution and fear that could be released.
"Being one of us means just that, man. Don't just sit on the outside and look in. Take a chance, talk to Jeff! Talk to Jeff with me there if you'd rather or talk to him alone. It think you'd do better alone with him. Tell him what's bugging you, about guys, about anything. If you're really going to fit in you've got to start with Jeff. He's the anchor here." Cody's voice betrayed some pleading and some frustration.
"You gonna tell him?" Tyler asked.
"Only if you say so. It would be the best thing though. I know that for a fact, dude," the young boy said seriously, his sparkling eyes focusing sharply on the seventeen year old.
"Ah fuck," Tyler said resolutely, "Go ahead when you think the time is right. I need to talk to somebody and I'd really like to feel good here."
"We can always arrange for you to feel good here!" Cody quipped shaking his hips from side to side so that his young flaccid meat flopped back and forth.
"Damn, you are the strangest kid I've ever met!" Tyler laughed taking a swipe at Cody which was easily dodged.
Cody ran out of the kitchen, through the family room, out the back and dove in the pool. Tyler took the cue and between the back doors and the pool doffed his underwear to make a spread-eagle leap into the water. The pressure of the last couple of days seemed to wash away in the water of that summer morning. Two boys played and splashed joyfully together, laughing, joking, teasing and rough housing. It was about an hour later when the phone rang.
"Hello," Cody answered, dripping wet and still naked.
"Cody?" the voice of Jeff's secretary asked.
"Can you come down here right away?"
"Why," Cody asked, his mind beginning to flood with fear.
"It's Jeff. He was totally out of control when he got here this morning. I've never seen him act like that. He seems like he's on the verge of a breakdown! I thought maybe he'd get better but I think it's worse," Ms. Stanners said nervously.
Cody went totally pale. "How ... how am I going to get there? It's 10 miles from here?"
"I'll send a cab right now!" Ms. Stanners answered quickly her voice full of concern.
"Right!" Cody said. "I'll be right there!"
Cody raced into the bedroom and threw on the first set of clothes he could find. In less than two minutes he was pacing out in front of Vista anxiously waiting for the damn cab to show up.
"Hey Cody, what's going on?" Tyler asked also fully clothed now.
"Something's wrong with Jeff. I gotta go!"
"What is it," Tyler asked with concern.
"I don't know man! I don't know!" Cody shouted with fear and tears in his voice.
"Hey man, easy," Tyler said laying a hand on Cody's shoulder. "Whatever it is, it'll be okay!"
Cody's whole body just shook, "Where is that FUCKING cab!!?"
"Want me to go with you man?" Tyler asked.
"NOOoooo! ... Hey I'm sorry man - didn't mean to yell at you. I've just gotta get going!"
Bill's Cab service finally pulled up the driveway and in a heartbeat Cody was in the back spouting off the address and telling the driver to hurry.
Midmorning traffic wasn't too heavy going south to Jeff's office in La Jolla. Ms. Stanners was on the curb waiting to pay the cab driver when the car pulled up. Cody gave her a furtive look and raced into the building pounding on the elevator button that would take him to the seventh floor. He bolted through the huge double doors of the lobby area and without a passing comment to anyone in the room launched himself into Jeff's office.
"Hey Dad, what's wrong?" he shouted with alarm.
I looked at the angelic face of my new son and just shook. He was so beautiful, so important to me and yet I was so hurt. I shouldn't have been but I had never felt such pain. I was as close to a breakdown as anybody could be. My mind was reeling with emotions and thoughts and conditions and consequences. I really had no idea how to deal with myself or my wondrous boy. Cody grabbed me by the hand and led to the couch. It was like I was being dragged through a fog.
"Dad, Dad," he pleaded, tears rolling down his face. "What is it?"
Cody's tears could always bring my own and quietly my eyes filled too and drops began crawling down my face. Cody put his arms around me and hugged as tightly as I had ever felt him squeeze. "Please tell me, Dad!"
"I don't know, Cody," I stammered out through my tears. "I don't know. I am really fucked up kid! I don't know what to do or how to handle it!" My fingers combed through his fine dark hair.
"About what, Dad?" he continued to beg.
"I am so fucked!" I said as I held my boy. I could feel some of my tension going away just by having him in my arms. "I don't know how to say this. I mean it's so dumb, so selfish - yet I hurt so badly!"
"What is it, Jeff!" he asked more quietly as he could feel my stress level reducing, his watering eyes peering up at me.
I took a deep breath and wiped my face. "I got up to check on you this morning and you weren't there. I panicked a little but I opened the door to Tyler's room and there you were sleeping. The sheets were tossed back and there you and Tyler were, wrapped in each other's arms. I guess I just went crazy Cody," I pushed him away a little, looking at him, feeling the hurt welling up again.
"Tyler was lonely and scared," Cody said with some fear in his voice.
"So!" I began to shout, "Some kid comes out here to stay with us and in two fucking weeks, you decide to take your clothes off and hop in the sack with him because he's lonely! Shit, Cody!"
Cody's eyes were paralyzed with fear and hurt. At that moment I was trying to hurt him - for the first time since we met, I wanted him to hurt like I did. I was pacing and crying. I didn't know what else to say. I didn't know what else to do.
My boy just sat there and looked at me, sobbing. I had let it out and now I was instantly sorry. I sat back down on the couch and held him tightly, he didn't respond but he didn't push away either. "Oh Cody, I am sorry. I didn't mean to say that! I told you I am so fucked up. Oh God, Cody I didn't mean it! Shit!" I began balling like a baby and I buried my face between his neck and shoulder. His arms encircled me once again and he was crying too. It was over five minutes before we let each other go. I took my hand and wiped his tears. "I'm so sorry for what I said, son. Can you forgive me?"
The look in Cody's eyes was all I needed to see. The love and trust were there again. The fear was gone.
"We didn't do anything, Dad!" he said quietly.
"You don't have to explain," I said sniffling.
"We had a really heavy talk after you went to bed last night," he continued quietly.
"Don't Cody," I said.
"You know what that fight we had was about?" he asked ignoring my comments about explanations. I shook my head negative.
"I caught him that night looking a pictures of boys on the computer," Cody said. I must have looked a little shocked.
"He accused me of spying on him. He was furious! I think he would have taken my head off if you hadn't of come in."
"I won't let him hurt you!" I said and then added, "Guess that's big talk from me after what I just did!"
Cody managed a weak smile but his hand found mine and the squeeze was in love.
"He likes guys, Dad, but he's never admitted it to anyone. He's so scared and confused. He didn't want me to tell you!"
"But you are," I responded trying to cope with all this new information, my own draining emotions and a whirlwind of thoughts running disjointedly in my head.
"He said I could tell you! This morning, before Ms. Stanners called."
"Would you have told me otherwise?" I asked knowing it wasn't a fair question but my clarity of thought wasn't fully restored.
"I don't know," Cody answered truthfully.
"I think you wouldn't have and I think I wouldn't have expected you to," I smiled caressing the side of his face.
"It doesn't matter now," Cody continued, "We just talked about how good a place Vista was and about you and when he went to bed, he seemed so lonely, I just thought he could use some company. I'm sorry Dad."
"Fuck, Cody. You don't have anything to be sorry for. I just really flipped out. I told you you should be with kids your own age and then I go and do something stupid like this. I just love you so much and ... I don't know... I guess I just feel like I'm losing you sort of ... and I should be... I mean it's normal for you to be with other kids ... but you're so special to me ... ah shit I don't know what I'm saying!"
Cody arms were around me again. "Jeff, you're my dad now. I love you more than anybody! You're stuck with me. You couldn't lose me if you tried. Even if you ran away to Indio!"
I finally gave a full smile and saw it returned in the boy's own. I caressed his hair again. "You're so special, kid. I don't know what I ever did to be so lucky as to have somebody like you. If I ever pull a stunt like this again, you slap me around big time, okay?"
"Okay!" Cody agreed.
"Hey?" I Iooked at him seriously again, "I mean it, I am really sorry!"
"I know, Dad. It's over, okay?"
"Yeah!" I sighed, all the tension now gone but so tired I could barely stand. "How about we go to Old Town for some lunch?"
"Great," Cody said.
I grabbed my case and with my arm on Cody's shoulder, we left my office. Ms. Stanners looked worriedly at me as we came out. I walked over to her and gave her a big kiss on the cheek.
"You are one special secretary, lady! I don't know what I'd do without you!"
She blushed and I could see relief come to her face. I noticed that Cody smiled at her too and gave her a quick thumbs up.
